Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: Why You're Always Tired

Pine forest on the sanatorium grounds

You wake up already tired. Coffee buys you an hour, weekends change nothing, and your to-do list triggers dull irritation instead of drive. When this goes on for weeks, it’s no longer “I just didn’t sleep well” — it may be chronic fatigue syndrome or asthenic-vegetative syndrome.

In this article we’ll look at why you’re tired all the time, when fatigue is a reason to see a doctor, what your gut and liver have to do with it — and what a five-day cleansing course at the RUTA center actually involves.

Why am I tired all the time? Fatigue as a signal

Fatigue is not a diagnosis — it’s a message. Your body is spending more resources than it manages to restore. The most common everyday culprits:

  • chronic sleep deprivation and an erratic sleep schedule;
  • long-running stress with no real recovery breaks;
  • an unbalanced diet — lots of processed food, little fibre;
  • a sedentary routine that slowly erodes stamina;
  • a recent infection your body never fully recovered from.

The key point: if a proper rest doesn’t bring your energy back, the cause usually lies deeper — in how your internal organs and metabolism are working, not just in your calendar.

Chronic fatigue syndrome vs asthenic-vegetative syndrome

The two are often confused, but there’s a difference worth knowing.

Asthenic-vegetative syndrome typically develops after acute respiratory illnesses. On paper you’ve recovered, yet weakness, sweating, blood pressure swings and rapid exhaustion linger for weeks. It’s the classic “the illness is gone, but so is my energy” scenario.

Chronic fatigue syndrome is a more persistent state: pronounced fatigue lasts for months, rest doesn’t relieve it, and it’s often accompanied by poor concentration, worsening memory and low mood — sometimes sliding into depressive or hypochondriac patterns, where a person becomes absorbed in their illness.

Both conditions are on the list of indications for the cleansing course at RUTA — alongside gut dysbiosis after prolonged antibiotic therapy, liver conditions and biliary tract disorders. You’ll find the full list of indications on the course page.

When fatigue means “see a doctor”, not “book a detox”

Let’s be honest here: not every kind of fatigue can be fixed by cleansing the body. Some conditions call for diagnosis and treatment by a specialist first:

  • Anaemia. Iron or vitamin B12 deficiency is one of the most common causes of weakness. A routine blood test reveals it.
  • Thyroid dysfunction. Hypothyroidism brings fatigue, drowsiness, feeling cold and weight gain.
  • Depression. Constant exhaustion, loss of interest in life and disturbed sleep can be its symptoms — that requires a psychiatrist or psychotherapist.
  • Sleep apnoea. If you snore and wake up wrecked despite eight hours in bed, your brain may have been short of oxygen all night.

If fatigue is sudden, keeps getting worse, or comes with weight loss, fever or pain — see a doctor first. This is exactly why the course at RUTA begins not with procedures but with an examination: ultrasound, ECG, complete and biochemical blood tests, and a urine test. The doctors work from a real picture, not guesswork.

What your gut and liver have to do with your energy

Your energy level depends directly on how well your body absorbs nutrients and clears metabolic waste. The gut and the liver sit at the centre of both processes.

The gut is where trace elements and vitamins are absorbed. When end products of metabolism and toxins accumulate in the intestine, the body responds with excess mucus. That mucus absorbs heavy metal salts and radionuclides — but at the same time it blocks the normal absorption of micronutrients and vitamins and keeps them out of metabolic and redox reactions. Put simply: you may be eating well but getting less out of your food than you could.

The liver is the body’s main filter and a key player in detoxification. Stagnant, thickened bile, fatty degeneration, or the after-effects of medication and alcohol reduce its ability to perform its excretory and detoxifying functions.

Dysbiosis after antibiotics deserves a separate mention. Long courses of antibacterial therapy — including treatment of urogenital infections — disrupt the gut flora, and that shows up in how you feel and how much energy you have.

This is the logic behind the RUTA method: to bring energy back, the body’s most congested organs need their metabolic processes restored — the digestive tract, the liver, the bile ducts and the kidneys.

What the 5-day cleansing course at RUTA involves

The course takes place as an inpatient stay at the Koncha-Zaspa sanatorium in Kyiv and lasts 5 days under round-the-clock medical supervision. The method is scientifically grounded and patented; its author is Professor S. M. Gusina, Doctor of Medical Sciences. The course runs in two stages:

  • Stage I — the liver, gallbladder, intestines and kidneys: normalising metabolic processes in the most congested organs and systems.
  • Stage II — lymph, blood and blood vessels: completing the cleansing of the digestive tract, liver and urinary system, normalising fat and cholesterol metabolism, clearing atherosclerotic deposits from vessel walls, and stimulating the immune system.

What the programme consists of

  • A protein-free, salt-free diet that unloads the liver, activates its excretory and detoxifying functions and increases diuresis.
  • Low-mineralisation mineral water (salt content 2 g/l) — Berezivska water has the optimal profile and is indicated for digestive, urinary and kidney conditions.
  • Herbal teas with anti-inflammatory, bile-stimulating, diuretic and cleansing effects.
  • Enema procedures based on medicinal herbs and seaweed — 2 to 4 daily, to free the intestine as fully as possible and prepare the biliary system.
  • A biliary “tubage” — oil-and-acid enterosorption using olive oil and freshly squeezed lemon juice, preceded by apple juice that opens the intrahepatic bile ducts. As a result, thick stagnant bile with bilirubin and cholesterol concretions of various sizes is released, and the intestine is freed of faecal stones and mucus.
  • Therapeutic back massage, an hour in the pool, quantum therapy, therapeutic exercises, water treatments and other procedures.

A detailed description of the approach is on the cleansing method page.

What guests report after the course

According to the center’s observations, after completing the course guests report:

  • higher activity levels and work capacity;
  • better psychological resilience and mood;
  • sharper attention and improved memory;
  • better overall well-being;
  • weight normalisation;
  • greater resistance to infections and improved endurance;
  • long stretches without flare-ups of chronic conditions.

This is not a magic pill — it’s a reset. Keeping the result requires maintenance: consistent sleep, sensible food, movement. People who take a systematic approach to their health repeat such courses once every 10–16 months, adjusting for lifestyle and habits.

Contraindications: who the course is not for

The cleansing course is a medical programme, and it has clear limits.

Absolute contraindications:

  • acute surgical and infectious diseases;
  • cancerous lesions with a progressive course;
  • chronic diseases with a high degree of activity or in the stage of decompensation.

Relative contraindications are strictly individual. The center’s doctors determine them for each specific case of a severe, long-standing illness. That is precisely why the pre-course examination exists — and it is included in the programme price.

How to start: booking the course

If constant tiredness has become the background of your life and a doctor’s check-up has ruled out conditions that need separate treatment, the cleansing course may be the reset you’re looking for. Questions and answers

Frequently asked questions

What is chronic fatigue syndrome and how is it different from ordinary tiredness?

Ordinary tiredness lifts after a weekend or a holiday. Chronic fatigue syndrome is a state where exhaustion drags on for weeks or months and rest barely helps. It often comes with poor concentration, memory lapses, irritability and low mood.

Why do I have no energy after an illness or a course of antibiotics?

After acute respiratory infections, many people develop asthenic-vegetative syndrome — lingering weakness and exhaustion long after recovery. Long courses of antibiotics can cause gut dysbiosis, which affects digestion and nutrient absorption. Both conditions are among the indications for the cleansing course at RUTA.

Do I need a medical examination before the cleansing course?

Yes, the examination is mandatory. Before the course starts, you undergo an ultrasound scan, an ECG, complete and biochemical blood tests, and a urine test. This lets the doctors rule out contraindications and assess your condition.

How long does the cleansing course take and how much does it cost?

The course lasts 5 days as an inpatient stay under round-the-clock medical supervision. It costs UAH 25,000 in a single economy room or UAH 31,000 in an upgraded room. The price includes accommodation, meals, the medical examination, massage, pool access and procedures.

How often can you do a body cleansing course?

People who look after their health tend to repeat such courses once every 10–16 months. The optimal interval is individual and depends on your lifestyle, diet, daily routine and habits.
